Dr. Sanjay Gupta, CNN’s Chief Medical Correspondent is a practicing neurosurgeon and until recent years was a booming voice in the campaigns against cannabis. It came as a huge surprise as Gupta recanted his prior arguments made against the benefits of using cannabis, especially after being behind pieces with titles as straightforward as “Why I Would Vote No on Pot” – published in Time Magazine in 2009. Regardless, Dr. Sanjay Gupta is a welcomed addition to the fight against the disinformation surrounding cannabis.
In late 2013 Gupta presented the facts in the first of his two-part documentary about cannabis simply entitled Weed on CNN, the second of which later aired a few months later in March of 2014. In this documentary, Gupta brings forth of facts and separates them from the myths by diving into the cannabis community on both the business and consumer sides. He humanizes cannabis users, putting names to faces and gives these patients the chance to express just how life altering cannabis can be.
“Dr. Gupta explores in his documentary how the “politics of pot” have ostracized those pushing for acceptance of the cannabidiol (CBD) in marijuana as a healer and not a destroyer. This is in the face of research confirming that CBD is more efficient than pharmaceutical drugs, which come with serious side effects and overdose risks.” (https://healthyhempoil.com/sanjay-gupta-weed/)
Cannabis high in CBD and low in THC such as Charlotte’s Web which was prominently featured in the two-part documentary as being used by Matt and Paige Figi who used the CBD dominant strain to create tinctures for their daughter to take sublingually as a treatment for Dravet Syndrome.
“Gupta makes clear the connection between marijuana prohibition by the U.S. government and the actual suffering of U.S. citizens. He says, “By 1970 it was a schedule one controlled substance. The government was saying it had no medicinal value and had a high potential for abuse. All reasons why the Figis stayed away from marijuana. Until this…” Cut to the little girl having a seizure. “The seizures start during the first year of life and are unstoppable. Difficult to control and very damaging,” Gupta says. The Figis tried every conventional medication to no avail. Gupta: “Her body was so frail that any seizure could kill her. With no traditional treatment left to try and the clock ticking away, her parents decided to try marijuana.” (https://www.projectcbd.org/article/dr-guptas-traveling-medicine-show)
With the aid of CBD Matt and Paige's daughter's seizures have decreased immensely from hundreds a day to only once a week. This is just one example of the positive impact CBD can have that Dr. Sanjay Gupta has brought to light. It takes a lot for someone to admit when they're wrong, especially after speaking out against something such as cannabis on such a public platform. Gupta has proven that no matter how far to one side someone may seem when presented with new evidence there is always the chance to change minds and create a positive impact with the voice you've been given.
